A Brief Introduction to Digital Library
Recently, the introduction of digital libraries has greatly enhanced the way we use, access, and manage the data. In this type of information retrieval system, the organizations or individuals can store data in the form of images, text, video, audio, or other formats, thereby allowing users to access it through the internet.
How is digital library different from the traditional library?
Unlike the traditional ones, the e-library uses relational databases to gather, store, and arrange a large amount of information. Besides this, it encompasses a digital library software, full-text search engine, and Web or FTP servers to offer the services in digital form. Another important characteristic that differentiates it is that it can include both paper and electronic materials existing beyond the administrative or physical boundaries of a single digital library.
Why do we need a digital library?
The reason why people use and need digital libraries may vary according to their choice or requirement. In this article, we have listed out some common grounds for the application of digital libraries.
- People can access the information from around the world with the help of internet.
- Multiple users can simultaneously retrieve the data through an easy-to-use search interface.
- Users can access the data 24/7, i,e., round the clock, with the help of e-libraries.
- It has unlimited storage space, hence, people can store as much information they want.
- It can also enhance the quality of digitized content by eliminating stains or color imperfections.
Limitations of e-Library
The digital libraries also have a few disadvantages which are mentioned below.
- It is not possible to use unless there is an internet or power supply.
- Because of loads of information, people may be unable to differentiate the useless data from the useful ones.
- It might be a loss for the traditional librarians or publishers.
Nowadays, the demand for the digital library is rapidly increasing due to the limitations of the traditional one. It is more likely that the recent technology may take over the former one shortly. Even though the digital library has its disadvantages, it can be solved by taking small and evolutionary steps gradually. Therefore, choosing it is certainly a feasible option for storing and accessing digital data.
